August 5, 2019

Dear Families at Gateway and Richmond Schools,

Ever since the two major quakes of July 4 and 5, all available resources have been focused on the district’s recovery and repair of all schools sites, departments, and office facilities.  It should be noted that every school and district property has required some level of repair, some more, some less.  And, much of the work continues 7 days a week…

As you are likely aware, the two sites that were impacted the most, are Gateway and Richmond.  The actual construction phase for repair started approximately two weeks ago.  I will tell you that our selection of Colombo Construction Company, Inc. and Ordiz-Melby Architects, Inc. is providing a professional and timely service that is successfully driving us to our best possible outcome.  Not only are they delivering on their promise for recovery, but they are taking a personal pride in helping our district back to normalcy.

Due to the extraordinarily compressed timeline for recovery, all available status reports have been analyzed carefully, and it has been determined that, pending board approval at its special board meeting this Wednesday, the start of school for students at Gateway and Richmond schools, only, will be delayed to Monday,  August 19.  All other schools will open for instruction on our normal start day of August 13.

The delayed start for students at Gateway and Richmond will allow for the full recovery of essential repairs, proper cleanup, and for timely access for faculty and staff to prepare classrooms for instruction. In addition, it will allow all our teachers to fully engage in the professional development days with the assurance of time acquired through the later start date.

More details will be communicated by your principal regarding:  ice cream social, Back to School Night, and many other important events.  Stay tuned!

I want to express sincere gratitude for all of your patience and support as we respond to this natural disaster.  All of the employees in Sierra Sands are 100% devoted to providing your family with a safe and positive learning environment.

Sincerely,
Dave Ostash, Ed.D.
