Sierra Sands Announces Procedures for Student Access to Schools during
NAWS Solid Curtain Drill
February 8 – 11, 2016

The Sierra Sands Unified School District has been informed by the Naval Air Weapons Station that it will be conducting a security training and readiness exercise February 8 – 11, 2016.  The exact date/time of the drill is unknown and the district will not be notified until the drill is underway.  You are encouraged to monitor local radio stations, the district’s website (www.ssusd.org), district Facebook site, and auto dialer messages carefully during this time for information regarding implementation of the exercise.  During this time of higher security measures please be prepared for the possibility of occasional delays during the exercise time.

If held at any time during school hours, the drill will not impact students who live on base, and students who normally ride the bus to and from school will be transported as usual.  The drill may prevent parents who hold white community passes from transporting their students to and from school during the drill.  Arrangements have been made to transport these students to and/or from school from a staging area set up at the Sierra Vista Shopping Center located at 1301 North Norma by the old Albertson’s.  The following directions are provided ONLY for those parents/guardians who transport their children to school and who are denied base access during the drill.

Murray Middle School:  If the drill is in progress before school starts,

  • Parents/guardians with only white community passes who normally transport their students and drop them off at Murray Middle School are requested to drop their students off at the Sierra Vista Shopping Center (by the old Albertson’s) between 6:45 and 7:15 a.m.  Students will be transported from the shopping center to Murray Middle School by bus.
  • Parents/guardians are requested to enter the Sierra Vista Shopping Center at the Norma Street entrance south of Pony Espresso and proceed as directed by staff, drop off students, and exit the parking lot by way of the Reeves Street exit.
  • District staff will supervise students and direct traffic.
  • Students will be transported to Murray Middle School by bus.

Murray Middle School:  If the drill is in progress at the time of school dismissal,

  • Buses will transport all students whose parents/guardians have only white community passes and are prohibited from access to the base at dismissal time.  The students will be transported to the Sierra Vista Shopping Center and will arrive between 2:30 and 3:00 p.m.
  • Students will disembark buses and line up according to grade.
  • Parents are requested to park in the parking spaces located nearest the old H & E building.
  • Parents are requested to report to the kiosk where they will present picture I.D. and sign a student pick up form.
  • Staff at the kiosk will validate parent/guardian information with emergency card and direct parents/guardians to student pick up area.
  • In order to facilitate orderly traffic flow, parents are requested to leave as quickly as possible after picking up their student.

Richmond Elementary School:  If the drill is in progress before school starts,

  • Parents/guardians with only white community passes who normally transport their students and drop them off at Richmond School are requested to drop their students off at the Sierra Vista Shopping Center (by the old Albertson’s) between 8:30 and 8:50 a.m.  Students will be transported from the shopping center to Richmond School by bus.
  • Students will be transported to Richmond School by bus.

Richmond Elementary School:  If the drill is in progress at the time of school dismissal,

  • Buses will transport all students whose parents/guardians have only white community passes and are prohibited from access to the base at dismissal time.  The students will be transported to the Sierra Vista Shopping Center and will arrive between 3:40 and 4:00 p.m.
  • Students will disembark buses and line up alphabetically.
  • If a parent/guardian is picking up students with different family last names, students will be placed alphabetically according to the last name of the oldest student in the family.
  • Children going to MOU will be escorted by staff to MOU buses.
  • In order to facilitate orderly traffic flow, parents are requested to leave as quickly as possible after picking up their student.

Be aware that this is the procedure for any higher threat condition and may happen anytime, unannounced, should real world events dictate.
